Kurukshetra

Counsel of Sri Krishna

धर्मक्षेत्रे कुरुक्षेत्रे

Speak the warwithin you.

Arjuna stood between two armies on the battlefield and could not lift his bow. You may stand between two lives. Tell Sri Krishna the situation. Receive learning, wisdom, and a path — then the choice remains in your hands.

I am the charioteer.

Not a distant judge. The friend who sits with you on the battlefield while the conches sound — the same Lord who sang the Gita as a book of choices, not of commandments.

Background

The Bhagwad Gita

The Bhagwad Gita is a 700-verse sacred Hindu text, a core episode set inside the great Sanskrit epic, the Mahabharata. It takes place on the battlefield of Kurukshetra, just before the war begins.

It is a conversation between Prince Arjuna, one of the leaders of the Pandavas, and Sri Krishna, who sits as his charioteer. Overwhelmed by the prospect of fighting and killing his own family and teachers on the other side, Arjuna drops his bow in despair and refuses to fight.

Krishna counsels him on dharma (righteous duty), the immortality of the Eternal Soul (Atman), and the paths of selfless action (karma yoga), devotion (bhakti yoga), and knowledge (jñāna yoga).
